Circle of Sisters Expo 2015

At the Jacob Javits Convention Center Saturday October 17, in its 15th year of operation, Circle of Sisters is presenting events for all ages that will educate, entertain and inspire. Hosted by WBLS-FM, HOT 97, WLIB-AM and Emmis Communications, Circle of Sisters is the largest expo for women of color in New York City-offering panel discussions, seminars, and demonstrations, two concert stages, and shopping opportunities with over 200 vendors.

Starting at 8am, today’s events begin on the Special Events Stage with the Circles of Sisters Worship Service led by Bishop Hezekiah Walker. The morning service is followed by several gospel performances throughout the day from Liz Black’s Gospel Showcase, Janice Gaines, Latice Crawford, Alexis Spight, and Sheena Lee. The afternoon also brings an event with Award-winning Gospel recording artist Tina Campbell featuring Teddy Campbell titled “One-on-One with Tina and Teddy Campbell”.

The expo also provides several activities and learning opportunities that are especially geared toward children, teens and parents. Starting just past noon at the Kids’ Pavilion, Project Pawn gets kids involved with the game of chess. For families thinking about college, the “Financial Aid, Scholarships, Applications and Etiquette” workshop is led by Adrienne King, Membership Chair for the NYSFAAA, Karriem Dean, Professional Business Leader, and Natalie Borneo & Sandra Edwards, Mentoring and Etiquette Coaches. And to celebrate the special bond between mothers and daughters, WBLS Radio Veteran Shaila and her daughter Deanii lead “A Mommy Moment with Our Daughters”.

Circle of Sisters also shines a spotlight on health. “Health S.O.S.” takes the Special Events Stage at 2:05pm. Panelists will include Soca musician Rupert Clarke, CEO and Co-founder of Black Health TV Corey Herbert, actress Naturi Naughton, and more.

Learning extends into the kitchen at the Food Pavilion with several celebrity chefs dishing out secrets. Chef Pat Neely, co-owner of Neely’s Barbecue Parlor in Midtown NYC and Neely’s Bar-B-Que restaurant in downtown Memphis, Tennessee, talks about southern cooking. Chef Jeff Henderson provides a taste of New Orleans. Iron Chef winner and TV personality Chef Madison Cowan brings his knowledge to the table too. Even Bobby Brown is on hand to let you in on his recipe for the perfect BBQ sauce.

A couple of other special events include a discussion with Emmy-nominated and Grammy Award-winning actor, director, poet, and musician Malcolm-Jamal Warner and the Circle of Sisters Fashion Show taking the Special Events Stage at 4pm. Many music artists and DJs will grace the WBLS / WLIB and HOT 97 performance stages throughout the day.
